Lesson Title: MYTHBUSTERS - Don’t FLIP Out!!
High School Isn’t THAT Scary!!

Tasks to be developed: Understanding basic concepts digital video production
Class Time and Period: 90 minutes, 1 block per day
Time Required: 10 class blocks
Date: Late Fall, 2011



Performance Objective: Students will be introduced to various activities surrounding the concept of digital video production. Students will use Flip™ Video cameras to produce a video that will be used during the high school orientation night for the county’s incoming 8th grade class.
Enabling Objectives:
Introduction Objectives
1. Students watch PowerPoint showing basic Flip™ camera operation
2. Students watch an episode of Discovery Channel’s Mythbusters™ to gain background knowledge of how show is presented
3. Students do various projects in MovieMaker™ to learn program’s features and integrate program with video clips made with the Flip™.
4. Introduce students to capstone video project and brainstorm ideas together

Explicit Steps
1. Students send out questionnaires to all 7th grade elementary students asking them what they fear most about coming to the high school
2. Students compile results and come up with a top ten list of the myth’s surrounding the high school.
3. Students divide into groups and choose one item from the list as their project.
4. One group will be chosen to serve as video editors. This group will not film actual video, but will compile all videos taken and create the final MovieMaker™ production.

Implicit Steps
1. Students create storyboards to illustrate how they will address their chosen “myth”.
2. Students utilize Flip™ cameras to film video scenes addressing common high school “myths” and showing younger students that they have nothing to fear about life in high school.

Background Knowledge
1. Students must demonstrate teamwork skills.
2. Students must use creativity to produce a fun, kid-centered video.
3. Students must possess basic knowledge of MovieMaker™, Flip™ cameras and basic video production techniques.
