Introduction: Do a gallery walk. I will post pictures on chart paper around the room. Students will walk around the room and write their thoughts, questions, and what they know on the post-it notes. They will place the post-it notes under the pictures. We will have a discussion on each of the pictures and do a KWL chart. This chart will be posted on the wall throughout this unit.
Guided Practice: I will introduce California Missions to them. I will go over who started them, why, and what life was like living there. I will show my iMovie to give them a background on missions.
Independent practice: In a time period of three weeks, students will use computers and the Tool Factory to construct a report on the mission they are assigned. They will be able to choose doing a Powerpoint, a digital scrapbook, or an iMovie on their mission.
Close activity: we will spend the last week of the unit presenting their reports the class. We will do an Art activity by painting in Native American sugar bowl. |

Comments |
This is a big unit for my fourth grade. We are trying to get funds as well to do a field trip. Until then, we assign their reports during the time that includes their Fall break. This is in case parents want to take them to a mission themselves. |
Cross-Curriculum Ideas |
This is a great opportunity to use reading comprehension, the steps to writing, art, and even a little math by having the kids look at the time lines and figure out how many years the missions were used, etc. |
Follow-Up |
I will give them an outline of California. The students will find pictures that go with what we learned and glue them to the outline. |
