Many of our 60 fourth grade students do not like to read or write. About 75% percent of them are second language learners, and about 10% have other issues like dyslexia, dysgraphia, or other processing issues. They are easily frustrated when reading and writing, so we HAVE to have a ways to motivate them to read and write. Enter animation and claymation!
Students are excited about reading a story, writing a script, completing a storyboard and working in groups to make the reading "come alive." We have completed one animation and one claymation and the students' reading and writing have improved.
We used iMovie to produce these projects but it is very difficult for the students to use. If we had animation software I know it would help the students in the editing process. Please view our latest claymation "Cinder-Elly," below.

Cross-Curriculum Ideas |
We plan to take the skills we've learned from doing this claymation, and incorporate Social Studies and History by creating a Claymation about the Native Americans and the establishment of the California missions. |
Follow-Up |
The follow-up activity to this claymation project is that the students will create their own invitations, and invite people from the local art community, their families and others to a special screening of their original claymation. |
