Students will complete a KWL about stop-motion photography and view examples of stop motion productions.

Students will learn/review story structure and write their own stories, developing characters that can easily be made into clay figures and settings that can be designed using classroom materials or materials brought from home.
(Students that want to partner up for this activity may do so.)

They will then learn how to turn their stories into storyboards using examples of storyboards and 9" X 12" paper folded into sections.

Students will view examples of clay characters online and from work done by other students, paying particular attention to expression and movement. Students will create their characters using clay and armatures. They will create backgrounds using poster board and various craft materials.

Students will learn/review how to use a digital camera and how stop-motion photography is accomplished, frame by frame. The students will use their storyboards as a plan to stop-motion photograph their clay characters with a digital camera.

After photographing their frames, students will learn how to upload the pictures to the computer and how to turn each frame into a claymation production using appropriate software.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
This project could be crossed with any of the core subject areas such as creating a claymation that shows how to solve a particular math problem, how to solve a social problem, showing a historical skit, etc.
Follow-Up
Film Day: Students will watch each others claymation creation, and possibly follow up with future claymation projects.
