Day 1 - Students will work with the teacher to brainstorm a list of math skills that are important to every day life and enable them the "power" to succeed. Students will then work in groups of 3 or 4 to design a rough draft of their super hero by deciding the gender, powers, and costume of their created hero. Students will share ideas with the teacher during center time and the teacher will help them develop the idea.
Day 2 - Student groups use their imagination to create a math superhero. Students will draw their superhero and label with mathematical powers that the super hero possesses. The students will draw, name and describe the super hero in detail. Students designs will be created on 1/4 sheet of poster board and laminated for display.
Day 3 - Students will be given a variety of fabric and math manipulatives, as well as other materials such as cardboard, jewels, buttons, pipe cleaners, etc. Students will design their super hero costume. Community Volunteers will be present to help students with designing and creating costumes.
Days 4 & 5- Students will create a talk show, or news show and write an interview sequence involving their superhero. Students in each group will be assigned jobs such as being the superhero, the interviewer, the camera man, and the director. Students will write a script in which the super hero answers interviewers questions following a heroic incident where the mathematical superhero was called upon to use their powers. The students must video the scenerio, followed by the interview.
Day 6 & 7 - Students will use the Tool Factory Movie Maker to create an edited video to share with the class. These videos will also be shared with parents through the SCHOOL LOOP system.
Day 8 - Students will share completed videos with the class and the school administration. |
