We will be incubating duck and goose eggs in my classroom.
Using a Flip Video Camera, my students will document each day of the duckling and gosling development.
Students will: 1. Record themselves daily describing what is happening inside the egg. We will candle the eggs (hold a flashlight up to the egg in a dark room, you can see the goose and duck growing inside), note any changes happening inside the egg and describe what they see and can hear inside the egg.
2. The students can record themselves using proper science vocabulary from oviparous to membrane.
3. On "hatch day" students can record the "birth" of our feathered friends from several vantage points.
4. After the ducks and geese hatch, the children will be allowed to take them home. They will be able to record the animals and document what adventures they are having.
5. We will be able to document the growth, changes, and development of the ducks and geese.
6. The children can record themselves reading books and materials about the development of the ducks and geese, as well as some of our favorites such as Chickens Aren't the Only Ones and Make Way For Duckling.
7. Another activity we do with our Duck, Duck, Duck...Goose unit is participate in an egg drop. The children must package a raw egg so that it does not break when dropped from a ladder. The children can record the egg drop and the opening of the boxes to see if their egg made it. (I have tried to do this with one video camera, but you don't get to capture the entire experience)
8. All videos will be posted to my school eboard so the entire school can see what is happening in the classroom with the ducks and geese. With parent permission, videos can also be posted to You Tube. |

I have incubated and hatched ducks for many years. It is the highlight of the year for my class. It would be so wonderful to have my students take part in the project in this way. |
