Communicating through Art

Objectives: students will be able to...
.Identify the featues and goals of the ArtLink program
.Explain the medium of art as a communication tool
.Identify their partner class country on the world map
.Identify what they "know" and "want to know" about their partner's culture

Materials: Sample art pieces and Artist descriptions
Preparation:15 minutes

1) Remove samples art pieces and artist descriptions.
2) Arrange students into groups. Place 1 international piece of children's art with each group.
3) Tell students thay have 2 minutes at each station to write down what they think the picture is telling them about the artist's life/culture/world.
4) After everyone has been to each group, show each picture and have students share some thoughts as a class.
5) Match each artist description with its piece and have students re0examine the art.
Mini-lesson:
1) Ask your class what the advantages are of using art as a means of conveying ideas with students in a different part of the world.Elicit the fact that art is a "universial language" and can be understood by everyone no matter what language they speak.
2) Discuss, and have students take notes about the goals of the ArtLink program.
30Tell students which country they will be partnered with and identify it on the world map.
Comments
I have 522 students and one desktop computer with no printer or projector for conferencing. We are a Urban school district with limited funds for the Visual Arts. The dominate language is Spanish. We have a high percentage of Free and Reduce lunch. Our make up is 300 Hispanic 150 Caucasian 100 African-American 222 Asian. We are very diverse.
