Close Reading and Analyzing Texts

Overview & Purpose:
Students will learn annotate and analyze texts using a Web 2.0 tool VoiceThread. Students will then create a presentation and brochure to present what the author is saying in the text.

Objectives:(Specify skills/information that will be learned.)
Students will continue to practice annotating texts and closely reading the text to understand what the author is saying using VoiceThread. Students will use PowerPoint and Publisher to present the information they have learned to another group of students.

Materials Needed:
•Common Core Texts
•Smartboard
•Tablets
•VoiceThread accounts
•PowerPoint
•Publisher

Information: (Give and/or demonstrate necessary information)
•Review of annotations to use.
•Explain the assessment tasks that will follow the activity.
•Students are assigned a text to read (2 groups).
•Provide students with a guiding question to focus their reading: "What is the author's perspective about the topic?" (The topic of the texts for this unit is education).


Activity: (Describe the independent activity to reinforce this lesson)

•Students will use their tablets to access VoiceThread and find the text they were assigned.
•Students will annotate the text using voice comments, text comments, or doodling annotation marks.
•Students will use the guiding question provided to focus their reading and analysis of the text.
•Students will get into groups based on their text and discuss what they learned from the text.

Assessment:
• In their groups, students will create a presentation about the text on the tablet.
•Students will also create a brochure to be handed out to the other group of students about this text and the author's perspective on education.

Materials: Flash Memory Camcorders, Writing
