Reading Fluency

1)Students will work in partnerships.
2)Each pair will have the opportunity to use the tablet/ recording device to record for one minute each person reading aloud.
3)Prior to beginning teacher will have given directions for:
a) turning on the timer on the tablet
b) how to turn on and use the audio recorder or the video recorder
c) show students where to save and in what format (with date and readers number or initials)
d) also how to project voices at the tablet/ recorder so that the sound is directed to the device
without shouting.
e) positive criticism and accepting others opinions, learning that others comments are meant
to improve, and if you don't understand the criticism don't get mad get a translation, talk to the
teacher and figure out the proper way to have the discussion.
4) After all set-up is completed the student will begin reading a grade level text aloud, their partner will hit the start button on the recorder before reader begins and then the timer as the reader reads. While the reader is reading their partner will also have a copy of the text that is to be read so that they may monitor for errors. (this may require an additional person initially.)
5) After reading the partners will discuss errors and then the reader will listen to themselves read. They will then talk with their partner about "voice", fluidity, and whether they paid attention to punctuation. The discussion notes will be written onto the fluency sheet from the reader, as well as the partners name and notes.
6) The teacher can later review recordings at notes at her leisure and have the student come up to discuss their findings, at that point the teacher may discuss strategies and ways to assist student development. Teacher may want to have student do a check-in with an at level book for further assessment and comparison.
