Everyday Recycling

Objectives:
At the completion of this lesson students will:
Identify recyclable vs. non-recyclable items
Identify different types of recyclable items including:
Plastic
Aluminum
Paper
Glass
Students will have ideas for integrating recycling into their homes

Duration
The Recycling lesson will take approximately eight class periods to complete.

Lesson Type
The activities in this lesson require students to complete worksheets and make presentations as individuals.

Technology Integration
The technology used in this lesson plan will be used by the teacher and then presented to the class. The teacher will collect data provided by the students and create a “Class Chart” using Excel. The chart will be printed out and hung in the classroom. The teacher will also use a digital camera, Ipad, or tablet to photograph student presentations of recyclable materials.



Instructional Procedures

Week 1

Monday:
Start class with an introduction to recycling
Three Parts: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Some materials are recyclable and some are not
Read story (The Three R’s: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle by: Nuria Roca)
Introduce “Home Project”, pass out worksheet
Use recycling worksheet from Tuesday until Friday to write down recyclable items in the home correlating with information learned in class.
The teacher will use this information to create a “Class Recycling Chart”
Monday of the second week students will also bring in a recyclable object
from home.

Tuesday:
Begin class with story (The Adventures of a Plastic Bottle by: Alison Inches)
Work through examples of recyclable plastic vs. non-recyclable plastic.
Milk Jug
Pop Bottle
Water Bottle
Pass out Plastic Worksheet
Students will trace “Plastic” and then draw examples of recyclable plastics.

Wednesday
Begin class with story (The Adventures of an Aluminum Can by: Alison Inches)
Work through examples of recyclable aluminum vs. non-recyclable aluminum.
Pop cans
Aluminum foil
Pass out Aluminum Worksheet
Students will trace “Aluminum” and then draw examples of recyclable aluminum using an Ipad or Tablet.

Thursday
Begin class with story (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Paper by: Alexandra Fix)
Work through examples of recyclable paper vs. non-recyclable paper
Newspaper
Copy Paper
Magazines
Phonebooks
Cardboard
Pass out Paper Worksheet
Students will trace “Paper” and then draw examples of recyclable glass using
an Ipad or tablet.

Friday
Begin class with story (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle Glass by: Alexandra Fix)
Work through examples of recyclable glass vs. non-recyclable glass
Glass drinking bottles
Glass jars (jam, jelly, etc.)
Pass out Glass Worksheet
Students will trace “Glass” and then draw examples of recyclable glass using
an Ipad or tablet.

Week Two
Monday
Collect “Home Project Worksheet”
Students will present their “from home’ recyclable object; teacher takes picture of
Student with object.
Students
What is your object?
How do you know if it recyclable?
Teacher At Home: Collect data create a class chart

Tuesday
Assign students a letter of the Recyclable Alphabet
Provide materials for students to use to decorate letter.
Hang letters around the room
Present Class Recycling Chart
Use all the student pictures to create a digital portfolio for parents to view their
child’s works.

Wednesday
Class Project: Coffee Filters Earths
Evaluation

The evaluation for this lesson will be based on participation in class and “at home”. Students will be screened on daily worksheets and class presentations to see that are grasping the lesson being taught.
