In order to best utilize a new camera with first graders, we would spend some time talking about how to use our Flip and what to do in order to capture video of people moving. Then, we will practice a little by taking video of students following our classroom behaviors. I will point out how nicely the camera is able to keep the picture steady even if we hold it as carefully as we can.
Once we have compiled the videos of proper classroom behavior, I will put them in my computer for the class to see what they have shot as well as review how we can meet our expectations.
Then, they will be put into groups that will focus on areas of the school. They will turn into Hollywood agents looking for "star" behavior from kids in the following areas of our school: 1. The hallway 2. The lunchroom 3. The playground 4. On the bus 5. Entering and exiting the building
However, every agent needs a plan on what kind of "star" they are looking for. They will begin by listing the rules for that area of the school onto a "Casting Call" sheet. The sheet will be still shot on the Flip. Then, during that time of day where potential "stars" would be acting the group of Hollywood agents assigned to that area would take their camera and film students who are doing the correct "star" behaviors. For example, the agents in charge of the playground would take their cameras out during recess to film students who are meeting playground expectations.
I would compile the videos for the students and share with them their work. I would ask them to see if they were able to capture all star behaviors or if they need to find more. They will add more as needed.
Once all videos are compiled for each area, they will be submitted for our class to watch. I would also ask the principal if they could be shared during lunch with the rest of the school and/or streamed onto SchoolTube for other classrooms to watch as they would like.
The main point of this lesson is to have the kids take ownership of their behavior while at school and notice how their friends are being "stars" here every day. The Flip is so easy for them to use that I feel confident they will be able to handle it. |
