Goal & Rational
Students will spend about 20 minutes each day learning to type. They will use the free online app., Typing Club. They will practice 10-finger typing technique, which will prepare them to type on the State SBA test in third trade and beyond. Proper 10-finger technique will build student confidence, enhance all future writing assignments, support computer research, and help to alleviate repeated motion stress such as carpal tunnel and neck/back fatigue from incorrect typing posture.
Implementation:
5-10 minutes of Typing Club will become our ongoing "Entry Task". It will facilitate a quiet, focused atmosphere each time students enter the classroom (Morning, after recess, after lunch). Students will log onto the free Typing Club App. While wearing earphones, they will follow the verbal instructions to follow the proper 10-finger typing technique. The teacher will circulate around the classroom to offer assistance, encouragement, and advice. Periodically, students will share their levels of achievement on the app. Following the typing practice, students will be ready to continue with the regular classroom schedule.
Assessment: After several weeks of practice, allow students to try typing some of their own written work onto an app such as Notability, Google Docs, or Microsoft Word. They must employ proper 10-finger technique, appropriate punctuation, and spelling. They may project their work using Apple TV and have the iPad read out loud what they have typed. This will assist with revising and editing. |

Cross-Curriculum Ideas |
Typing skills are used across the curriculum. They especially enhance ELA writing skills with the use of the voice to text ability on the iPad. Students can independently revise, edit, and present their own created works of prose and poetry. Typing skills are also required for taking our State SBA test in future grade levels. |
Follow-Up |
Students will be able to use a variety of apps to support research and writing when they are confident with using a keyboard. They can display their writing with slide shows, animated presentations, and use the iPad to voice their work. |
