The proposal is funding for an Assistive Technology Communication lab that would benefit all teachers and students at Washington Center. Washington Center services students with moderate to severe disabilities including Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Intellectual disabilities and other significant impairments. Most students are non-verbal or have limited verbal ability. Sensory impairments such as hearing and vision impairments are also prevalent in our student population. This grant would help fund the purchase of assistive technology such as communication devices, adapted switches, and switch accessible toys. We will also purchase wheelchair mounts so that students can have access to their communication device wherever they are for meaningful interactions with adults and peers. The lab will also include computer software that will allow teachers to develop communication pages for use on classroom Ipads. This software gives students a powerful tool to communicate in their classroom environment for academic participation and social engagement. Materials are also needed for creation of object-based communication symbols for our students with vision impairments or who respond best to concrete, tangible symbols. We are passionate about providing our students with appropriate assistive technology that increases their ability to communicate and engage with the world around them. Thank you for your support!
