I am part of my school district's NGSS Early Implementation Committee, and part of my job is to develop STEM activities that can engage students in ways recipe science has failed to do so for years. Our population is largely in poverty and have no access to resources, scientific toys, or opportunities to learn outside of school. With the other teachers at my school we can take these kids who have never been made to believe they can be scientists, engineers, or computer programmers, and develop the skills necessary to both excel with the NGSS and pave them a path to a career. I want to be the first Title I school in northern California with a 3D printer to challenge my students to become engineers. We are also working to study phases changes by using distillation to clean contaminated water. Science has been boring and cookie cutter for so long, but I know that together we can develop a new generation of engineers, scientists, and computer programmers.
