Computers can be used as tools for STEM education with 3D printers in the classroom. These tools allow students to not only work with 3D printers for printing, but to research and gain experience in engineering and design. They can research problems to investigate, form ideas, plan a course of action, then design and print a physical solution. In this, the learning process becomes student directed and relevant to the individual. Another benefit to incorporating these tools and 3D printing methods into the classroom is that students can troubleshoot and refine their designs, either during or after the printing process. They need to learn that it is important to reach a goal, but it is also important use failed products and mistakes as opportunities to learn.
