The Resource Room at Meridian Park serves between 20 and 30 special needs students at any point in time. The classroom supports children who are on the spectrum, have behavior disorders, or may not be meeting grade level requirements. The students see educational specialists and receive training on social interaction depending on their individual needs. Desiring inclusion for everyone, the Resource Room students attend the general education classes to the greatest extent appropriate. The students are dispersed among approximately thirty classrooms As the Resource Room has one full-time certified teacher and approximately one full-time support person, immediate help to distressed students may not be available.

This proposal requests sixteen smart phones without any phone, text, or data service to serve as pocket computers. It also requests a wall mounted tablet to immediately report student recorded data to the Resource Room teacher. The pocket computers, issued to the students during the day, would periodically vibrate reminding students to document and regulate their emotional zones. This support the Zones of Regulation program currently implemented in the school. The documentation will help identify emotional triggers and can be viewed on the teacher's monitor immediately upon student entry. The students would also be able to remotely communicate with the Resource Room teachers, with a text-like app. This level of communication will give the teachers the opportunity to intervene before a situation becomes critical. This tool will effectively allow the teachers to be with more students at once. As a side benefit, the pocket computers can vibrate and send the students semi-hourly messages like "focus" or reminder messages like "meet dad at the office after school.” The intent of this proposal make both the students and teachers more effective through communication and reminders.
