Hartley Elementary is a Title 1 building that house 385 students in grades PreK through 5. With 92% of the students qualifying for Free and Reduced Lunch, teachers are striving for quality instruction every single day to reach the needs for all of the students. Hartley is a diverse building - 60% minority, 25% identified in Special Education, and 29% of the building are English Language Learners. When used effectively, technology can be huge for reaching all learners and engaging them even when the teacher is working with other students. BrainPop would hugely benefit all students at Hartley Elementary. BrainPOP creates animated resources that support educators and engages students. BrainPop content includes movies, quizzes, games, and activity pages. BrainPop covers hundreds of topics within Math, Science, Social Studies, English, Technology, Arts & Music, and Health. It also discusses important topics in a student friendly way such as bullying, cyberbullying, and peer pressure. The $2,840 would go towards a 1- year subscription for BrainPop for older students, BrainPop Jr for K-3 students, BrainPop ESL for English Language Learners, and lastly it would include BrainPop ESP which is BrainPop in Spanish! A study in 2009 found that a school that used BrainPop for just ONE semester saw significant improvements in science, reading comprehension, language, and vocabulary skills compared to schools that did not use BrainPop.
If we receive this grant we would compare state test scores to prior scores to evaluate the program.
