We are trying to raise money to create a video production/editing lab at Fairfield Center School in Fairfield, VT so that the students can produce a weekly school news show and see media development as a part of their education. This is so important because the students will see how media is crafted because they have taken part in creating it. They'll experience developing a message for a mass audience. This is vital because today’s students spend over 45 hours a week with the mass media: listening, reading, surfing, watching, playing it. The messages they receive from the mass media are overwhelming, and I believe the most powerful way to make sure students have the ability to decipher, analyze, and contemplate media messages is to teach them how they are constructed with real life, project-based learning. It is so important for students to understand modern media, but even more than that they need to know how to develop it, how to manipulate it, and, most importantly, how to understand it.
Fairfield Center School is a small school in northern Vermont with limited access to technology or funding for technology. This would be greatly appreciated and constantly used to enhance the students 21st century skills and learning.
