I am a 6th grade ELA/ICT (integrated classes with a 40/60 ratio of special education students to general education students) teacher in Brooklyn NY in a school which services almost 1200 children of varied levels and abilities. We have a diverse population which continues to grow each year. Our class sizes are getting bigger (currently 34 in EACH class) and not all have regular access to technology when they leave school. Unfortunately, there is also limited access in school; we have one shared laptop cart of 20 per floor, however some of the 20 no longer work. We also have between 8-17 classrooms on a floor (3 floors) which means bring able to count on having access to a cart is a challenge in and of itself. It's not very likely most students can use them regularly. There are so many amazing things my students would be able to accomplish with regular and consistant access to online databases, publishing software and opportunities, and collaborative projects which could created in real time (slide shows, videos and discussion boards to name a few) if I could constantly plan and incorporate technology into more lessons and units. Students would also be able to work independently towards meeting personalized goals they set through out the year. Ideally, I'd love to have a Chromebook for every child in the room!!! But realistically starting with a smaller percentage to at least enable students without access at home to be able to count on me and my class to provide the many opportunities they might otherwise not have. Thank you for taking the time to read through my post.
