Swansboro High School is located in a rural area on the coast of Eastern North Carolina near one of the nation's largest Marine Corps bases, Camp Lejeune. Three elementary schools worth of students will eventually attend our school, and with a growing population and limited funds, it is the students who ultimately feel the effects.

Digital Media is a program that aims to introduce students to the principles of journalism and the importance of clear, appropriate communication skills in the professional world. The course also serves to develop students' understanding of the basic technology and software used to produce professional works of journalism through real world application. Students produce a daily school-wide newscast which, with the exception of a supervisor, is completely student-run. While some students may be camera-shy, and others may not have much previous experience with computers, Digital Media challenges students to step out of their comfort zone and expand their educational horizons.

Swansboro is the only school in the county with the Digital Media program, and it often attracts students from other schools. Digital Media is offered in two core levels and a third advanced level ranging from ninth grade to the twelfth grade level. Our instructor works hard to provide students with a fresh, exciting, up to date experience, but that's hard to do with out of date software and second-hand equipment. With the right funding, the Digital Media program can grow to keep pace with current technology, meet student needs, enhance their experience, and ensure the continuity of such a valuable program for future students.

With the amount of digital work that is done in this class, a scanner would prove extremely valuable, and that is the goal of this fundraiser.
