iPads and Molecule Modeling Software:
We are just beginning a "Pre-Advanced Placement" (Pre-AP) program in 8th grade Science, to foster interest and success for our inner-city Los Angeles mostly Latino students, in high school AP classes, especially Physics and Chemistry. Their interest and success in this program will hopefully help them to choose careers in STEM. Their ability to be successful in high school AP classes will also ensure that they will be able to get scholarship money for college.
We desperately need technology tools - iPads for our students to access the web with all the interactive apps, tools and science software. We are asking for a set of 20 iPads, plus funds for the purchase of software. Some of the interactive software that supports this curriculum includes "Odyssey Molecular Modeling" software from "Wavefun.com".
In California, the concepts of Chemistry constitute about 2/3 of the 8th grade Science curriculum. Because most of our students are English Language Learners or ESL students, it is essential that they have the most powerful visualization tools such as iPads and this software.
