The English/Language Arts curriculum places emphasis on reading both fiction and nonfiction texts. Within our school we seek to reach the struggling and reluctant readers. Kindles are a great way to reach those readers as they do not feel embarrassed or different when their reading levels are different from those of their classmates. Kindles also provide large text and audio functions suitable for students with disabilities.


• According to a recent research report from the Metiri Group (2009), hand-held mobile devices can have a significant impact on student learning.
• Kindles are supported by the National Capital Centre for Literacy Research (NCCLR), an organization which works with the Department of Education to motivate and support disengaged and struggling readers using technology, specifically kindles.
• A research study of 199 middle school students showed that students rated reading more valuable as an activity after two months of using an e-reader, Dara Williams-Rossi, International Journal of Science and Technology.
• The use of e-books provide new opportunities and possibilities for engagement, Larson, 2009, Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy, 53(3).
• In ReKindling an Interest in Reading with At-Risk Students by Melissa Engel –Unruh, argues that gadgets like the Kindle can spark interest and get them to read in a format that teens can appreciate
