This interdisciplinary project incorporating English, Social Studies, and Writing is designed to provide an opportunity for 7th and 8th grade students to learn the importance of civic engagement. In collaboration with teachers, students will develop relationships with local civic leaders and community members to learn the importance of civic engagement in dealing with community concerns and problems.

A major emphasis of this project is the development of 21st century technology skills, while strengthening writing, critical thinking, and public speaking skills. Utilizing state of the art video recording equipment, students will interview community leaders and create documentary iMovies that speak to the strengths and challenges facing their communities. These iMovie documentaries will expose the concerns and needs of the community through the “eyes of the student” and chronicle the steps that community leaders and members must take to address these issues. In a public forum, students will share their documentaries and place a call to action to local civic and community leaders.

I will be purchasing video cameras and audio equipment so that students can produce these documentaries but I will need additional funds to install and purchase of a projector, speaker system and screen to show the documentaries in our auditorium. The remainder of any additional rewarded funds will go to the implementation of the community service projects.
