As a class, read and discuss Eye of the Storm: Chasing Storms with Warren Faidley by Stephen Kramer. The text is rich with scientific and technology based vocabulary. Using vocabulary rich resources to ensure students have a strong understanding of severe weather and the technology used to track and record weather patterns. (a wonderful site is http://www.smbsd.org/page.cfm?p=1445)
After completing the story and checking for comprehension, focus on what questions the students feel Stephen Kramer might have asked Warren Faidley in order to write his story.
Based on the story and their own current knowledge of severe weather, have the students work with a partner or small group to create mock interview questions. Then individually or with group/partner, have students create the answers they feel Warren would have provided. (answers must be based on fact and inference from the story and internet searches)
Have students practice asking each other the questions and responding in order to become fluent and confident.
Using the Flip camera, digital camera, or digital camcorder, have students film their interviews.
Students will need to view, edit, and/or reshoot their video until they have captured their best interview.
Students share their completed films during a class publication party. |
