Planned By: Carole Katz
Original Author: Carole Katz, Paterson
Objectives:
- Apply creativity and focus in capturing the photos about the historic sites and Chinese culture that will make this trip most memorable for all
- Employ photography as a prompt to stimulate and enhance student writing
- Team and apply edit and technology skills to create a team journal and DVD.

Twenty underprivileged students (grades 8-12) will be visiting China for a ten day trip of a lifetime. Many do not have their own cameras.

This "group cameras" will be used by the students who will serve as "roving reporters." Each student will be responsible for capturing the historic and cultural sites they deem most significant to their experience. Seeing China "through the lens" will tap their creative skills.

The photos will then serve as the prompts for detailed writing assignments. Each student will reflect on their individual photos and write about: why one or more specific photos were taken, what they saw, and what each photo reveals that they might not have noticed at the time. Students will vote to select the best photos from the group, accompanied by the write-ups for a team journal. Students will apply leadership and their technology skills in editing the work for a team DVD and written journal.

At the conclusion of the trip, the students will vote on which student best demonstrated the characteristics of leadership, flexibility, and strong work ethic (in taking the photo and writing assignments most seriously). That student will be awarded the camera.
