Lesson Plan Cycle based on Gagne's Nine Events of Instruction

1. Gain Attention: Stimuli activates receptors

During Circle Time Teacher will play the song of "Old McDonalds had a farm." Each child will hold a different farm animal picture and will make the animal sound at the rhythm of the song.

II.C.2 Child perceives differences between similar sounding words.
II.D.1. Child uses a wide variety of words to label and describe people, places, things, and actions.
VI.B.1. Child identifies and describes the characteristics of organisms
VI.B.3. Child recognizes, observes, and discusses the relationship of organisms to their environments.

2. Inform Learners of Objectives: Creates levels of expectation for learning

Teacher will specify objectives for the children; "We will be learning about farm animals". And will turn on the projector to see the farm animals in the wall.

3. Stimulate Recall of Prior Learning: Retrieval and activation of short-term memory

Teacher will engage in an instructional conversation and talk to the student of places where they can find these animals and ask for characteristics. (e.g. Farm, the Wild, etc.)

Material Needed

* 102 Children's Song Disc 1
* "The Big Red Barn" book
* Different craft materials
* Elementary Zone Software by Tool Factory Inc.

4. Present the Content: Select perception of content

Teacher will read the book "The Big Red Barn" by Margaret Wise Brown.

5. Provide "Learning Guidance": Semantic encoding for storage long-term memory

Children will be allowed to choose workstations in which the computer station will include the Elementary Zone 4-7 Software (Animal Sounds, Does it Grow?, Is it alive?)

Workstations

Language Arts: Find upper and lower case Letters/Word (Farm Animal Theme)
Math: Sort Farm Animals / Building a Barn with Blocks
Science: Animals and their babies folder
Listening Station: "The Big Red Barn" tape & book
Social Studies: Dramatic play

6. Elicit Performance: Responds to questions to enhance encoding and verification
Children will make their own Big Red Barn including farm animals utilizing different craft materials.

7. Provide Feedback: Reinforcement and assessment of correct performance

Teacher will finalize lesson utilizing animal sounds and matching the sounds to pictures during circle time.

Experience - Teacher will send a permission slip to parents to visit the "Old McDonald Farm"

8. Assessment Performance: Retrieval and reinforcement of content as final evaluation

Teacher will collect the products per workstation/pictures and add in each student portfolio. Teacher will collect data/notes for every child and add in childˇ¦s portfolio.

This lesson will be utilized to target multiple objectives such as Mathematics, Language Arts; Writing & Reading, Science, Social Studies and Technology.

9. Enhance retention and transfer to the job: Retrieval and generalization of learned skill to new situation

Teacher will organize a Field Trip to the "Old McDonalds Farm". With this activity children will be utilizing all their senses to learn about Farm Animals.
