Lesson Plan for Flip Video Commercial Podcasts: This is a culminating project to follow a unit on Advertising Techniques and Persuasive Text 1. Students will work in pairs. 2. The students will pretend they have been hired by a company to advertise a product, person, or idea. 3. The students will write a 30 second to one minute commercial for a product, person, or idea. 4. The students must use figurative language and advertising techniques in their script. 5. The students will create a visual: props, costumes, posters, videos, etc (music can be included also) 6. The students will act out the commercial and it will be videotaped using a Flip Video camera. 7. The students will take the video from the Flip Video camera and edit it in iMovie to publish the commercial. 8. The teacher will then upload the commercials to his/her Wiki page using Podcast Capture so that students and parents can view the commercial online.
Think Sheet for Advertising Commercial Project: You are being challenged to create a commercial for one of your favorite products. Pretend that the executive from your favorite product or service has contacted you and your partner to help them sell their goods. This is a brainstorming sheet that you will use to make decisions about your project. You will follow the rubric provided to find out how much you will get “paid” for the quality of your presentation. You will be video taping and using iMovie to create your final product.
1. Pick an item from the list below to create an advertisement. Examples have been given; movie, book, restaurant, product (NIKE shoes), store, location (Worlds of Fun), music group, idea of your own ITEM:__________________________________
2. Use at least three types of advertising techniques that we have learned in class. 3 Types:________________ ____________________ _____________________
3. You must have visuals/sound in your commercial. What will you use? Here are some suggestions: props, Powerpoint, poster, music, skit/costumes, pictures.. Ideas:___________________________________________________________
4. You must write a script to go with your presentation. Use persuasive language, including figurative language and advertising techniques. The commercial will be a minimum of 30 seconds and a maximum of 60 seconds. Jot some ideas down here for later use.
5. You will be using technology to create your project. You need to think about how your commercial will look while being filmed. You get to edit it and create an iMovie that we will be able to share online with others. You will be getting a roadmap for the use of technology. You will use a Flip Video camera, download the video to iMovie, edit the movie and share it with others.
6. Who is your audience? What bias and point of view do you have that you will need to get across to your audience?

Commercial Rubric: Students were given the following points on each of the categories listed below for their grade. Did not meet all requirements = 1 point Met some requirements = 3 points Met all requirements = 5 points
Category: Product was clearly stated and approved. Three advertising techniques were used. Visual was used and was creative and appealing. Written script was turned in and included figurative language and persuasive language. Technology was used correctly. Presentation was done in appropriate time length. Presenters addressed audience point of view and bias.
***(This was our students' roadmap for transferring their Flip Video into an iMovie on our Apple computers. I thought I would include it as a guide for someone else to create their own roadmap steps since obviously the steps would not be the same in each situation.)

I am submitting this lesson plan with the permission of Kirstie Towner and Ruby Nelson (7th grade Language Arts teachers at El Dorado Middle School). As a district technology support person I was involved in this lesson by assisting the students with transferring their Flip videos commercials to iMovie, which would then be posted on their teacher's school webpage (Wiki). |
Cross-Curriculum Ideas |
Students could create their props in their art class or get assistance from their music teacher for songs to use in their commercials. Different math concepts become part of the commercials when using percentages, product pricing comparisons and other statistics. |
Follow-Up |
The students watched the other completed commercials made by their fellow students. Since the commercials were posted on their teacher's school webpage (Wiki) their parents and other interested community members could also view their final class project. |
