Grades P-K through 5
School: Rummel Creek Elem School, Houston, TX
Planned By: Theresa Trevino
Original Author: Theresa Trevino, Houston
Using various technologies, students will be able to capture their lives and bring it to life in an interactive scrapbook. FLIP and digital cameras, as well as Photoshop elements and various scrapbooking techniques, will become a seamless tool as students capture their personal adventures. As they create a monthly journal, they will be about to crop and create memoirs that will become a timeline of their life in second grade.

The students will participate in a metamorphosis from a technological novice to an expert gaining an in depth understanding of Web 2.0 tools. By using technology, like a digital camera & software, FLIP camera, and scrapbooking supplies and techniques, students will be able to go further in depth in the writing process. This activity, which will take the year to complete, will thrive on the students’ creativity and transform it into a collaboration of memoirs that will become a timeline of their experiences during the school year. It will enhance their learning experience as they learn how to take digital photographs and manipulate them to fit their needs. They will also learn how to use a FLIP camera to capture special celebrations so that they can journal them in their scrapbook, adding detail where needed and with more descriptive words. Most of the work will be completed with our learning buddies in hopes that the use of technology will not only trickle down throughout the rest of the grade levels, but also become the “hook” into Web 2.0 skills.

This project embeds creativity to the maximum! Using scrapbooking paper, stamps, pens, web 2.0 tools, photography and video, students will apply their multiple intelligences to create pages that will be interactive and bonded together as a unique timeline of their life experiences. Because this is novel activity, and yet to be accomplished, the thrill of the product from beginning to end, will captivate all! Because of Web 2.0 tools and other technology such as the Macintosh’s PowerPoint on steroids and graphics capability, students will be enticed as enthusiasm and creativity feed from each other’s creation.

Follow-Up
The student and teacher together will generate several rubrics that will evaluate different items of their timeline. Some of the criteria will simply be composed of a checklist that will be filled out on a monthly basis. Other assessments, which may occur anytime throughout the year will only be evaluated after mini lessons have been taught, students have been given several opportunities to practice and create, and have been given the opportunity to gain peer feedback. Final products will be appraised based on the student’s learning about non-standard design instruction, photography do’s and don’ts, writing expectations which focus on memoirs, use of a FLIP camera, and basic scrapbooking / embellishing techniques. Memoirs will be measured using the district’s writing continuum.
