Day 1--High School students were cleared to go to the high school and help with lessons for one class block (84 minutes) and received information from teachers on what they were looking for in a video, including vocabulary and what kind of labs the students had done. Day 2--High school students are given the project rubric and have started working on their storyboards. They are to complete the story boards and get teacher approval. Day 3--Video lesson on what to do. Start videoing. At this time, they are allowed to film anywhere on the high school grounds using their camera. Day 4-Lesson on editing...Start editing using moviemaker (standard with Windows) or use iMovie at home. Students are given a week to turn in complete video in a form that can be passed on to the elementary class that they adopted.
Comments
At the present time, we have been using personal electronics (my camera and several students) to complete this project. Several elementary teachers have had a positive attitude toward the outcome and would like to have this occur on a regular basis. One of the elementary teachers and I would like to make this a joint venture and then have the high school students work with the younger students to learn how to use the technology. At the present time, any help we can get would be great appreciated.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
This could be done with any subject area. I have thought about working with the math department to come up with several math/science videos where science uses math.
Follow-Up
Students receive rubric grade from elementary teachers as well as the DC Biology instructor (myself). Students deliver finished product.
