Goal: Provide every student with an opportunity to work in collaborative learning groups to create projects that will promote environmental awareness.
Students will work in small groups to create projects that will inspire other students to reduce, reuse, and recycle. Each cooperative-learning group will collaborate on a specific environmental focus.
Materials: laptop computers, digital cameras, paper, pencils, markers, paints, reusable water bottles, recylce bins, reusable bags, and other materials related to student environmental projects
Anticipatory Set: Lead students into the project by viewing a video clip of a waste site and the harmful effects human irresponsible consumption and waste disposal have on the environment.
Plan for independent practice: Students will each have a role in the environmental project group. Some students may choose to conduct research, make posters, others may create a PREZI on the computer, some may write reports, or create graphs and charts, while others write letters seeking business partners to help promote and support their cause.
Final product: Students will use the flip-videos to create videos of their group's project, sharing their passion and commitment for making a difference. By sharing their research with graphs and charts, modeling ways students can join the cause, and communicating the positive effects students can make, the projects have sustainability. The videos can be added to teacher, school and district websites to inspire others to FLIP-OUT OVER ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS!
As an added bonus, the students can incorporate the projects into their Disney Planet Challenge, in which students strive to make a difference in the environment. |

Comments |
The flip-video camera can be used for everything from the described project, to Readers Theatre and everything in between! |
Cross-Curriculum Ideas |
The students would love the opportunity to use video skits, Readers Theatre, environmental causes, and service learning projects. They can send messages to deployed soldiers, serenade folks in retirement homes, and model the 7 Habits of Happy Kids. |
Follow-Up |
Students can continue to expand on their projects, conducting additional research and sharing their knowledge with other students far beyond the walls of the school. |
