Standards: Students will read for fluency, information, growth, and pleasure, Speaking Process, Writing Process, Elements of Literature, Technology Integration.

Essential Question: How can we motivate junior high students to read and write original book reports/ reviews without having them write an essay about the book?

Procedure: Students need to read a book of their choice. Students will record themselves using a Flip Video Camera reading selected passages and dialogues to illustrate elements of literature, characterization, and plot for a book review. Include original props to illustrate setting, character, and plot. Music is optional. If the book is nonfiction, students will include research about the topic. Students can work individually, with a partner, or in a group. Submit a written plan to the teacher before recording.

Presentation: Using the SMART Board, students will present the book review to the class.

Evaluation: Rubric of assigned criteria including the following:

Elements of Literature
Characterization
Plot
Theme
Dialogue
Setting
Props
Music(optional)
Research (nonfiction)

Follow Up and Evaluation: Store in a data base online or on a flash drive to view for evaluation, enjoyment, or information.





Comments
There are many book reviews online and it would be fun for students to be able to make their own. Students love to work in groups and they love to watch themselves in videos.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
This idea is not limited to book reports. It could be used as an activity for any reading assignment. This could be integrated in any subject with Language Arts and Reading.
Follow-Up
A data base of recorded book reviews could be stored online or on a flash drive to be used to help students select books or as classroom instruction or motivation.
