Digital Wish Works With Dell Powering the Possible to Expand Youth Learning! |
Posted by Jonathan Gallup at 06:43:40 PM Fri 08/31/2012 |
2012 grant will provide 346 children with access to technology across Nashua, New Hampshire.
Manchester Center, VT - August 31, 2012 –Digital Wish has been selected as a recipient of a 2012 Dell Powering the Possible grant. Digital Wish will receive funding in the form of cash grants and equipment donations to leverage technology and further the organization’s mission of providing a brighter future for underserved youth.
Two schools in the Nashua School District will be selected to receive 50 laptops to create a program that provides one-computer-per-child in a selected classroom, and promotes the development of technology skills throughout the Nashua School District. Digital Wish’s trainers collaborate with the classroom educators to teach courses on innovation and creativity, critical thinking, problem solving, technology literacy, and collaborative learning. After school, students will work with Dell volunteers to build innovative projects and computer games that require problem solving and newly developed IT skills.
“Digital Wish’s current program in Nashua builds on Dell's past support of our 1:1 computing initiative in 24 schools in Vermont and one school last year in Nashua,” said Heather Chirtea, Executive Director of Digital Wish. “We are very thankful as this continued partnership with Dell will allow us to replicate all of those valuable lessons we learned in Vermont and Nashua schools, and apply them directly to two more schools in the Nashua School District, bringing us one step closer to putting relevant technology in every classroom in America.”
The Dell Powering the Possible program provides an incredible opportunity for the Nashua School District to train technology leaders from across the district. Digital Wish encourages internal staff to mentor one another in order to sustain the program beyond the term of this grant. The Nashua School District will be left with an entire methodology of technology integration, including worksheets and videos from seven unique curriculum units, as well as a Digital Citizenship course for the supported schools.
In addition to technology solutions, Dell will provide Digital Wish with the volunteer services of a local Dell champion who will manage employee engagement opportunities with local Dell team members.
“We know technology can do a world of good, and we are thrilled to be working with Digital Wish to help them further their overall mission,” said Trisa Thompson, Dell’s Vice President of Corporate Responsibility. “At Dell, we believe that children should have an opportunity to develop their potential through technology. With this partnership, we are one step closer toward closing the technology gap among underserved communities across the globe.”

3M Partners with Digital Wish To Help Bring Tablets into the Classroom |
Posted by Jonathan Gallup at 02:52:37 AM Wed 08/01/2012 |
3M Partners with Digital Wish To Help Bring Tablets into the Classroom
Parents Can Support 3M Screens for Schools
and Apply for Chance to Win up to $25,000 in Tablets for Local School
July 31, 2012 - Manchester, VT - Studies have shown that the use of tablets in classrooms may help students score better on math and literacy tests, with one group of students testing 20 percent higher after using an Algebra app than their peers who used a textbook.[1] To help make tablets more accessible for schools on a tight budget, 3M, the maker of 3M Screen Protectors, is partnering with Digital Wish, a non-profit organization that works to outfit classrooms with the latest technology.
Through the 3M Screens for Schools grants program, 3M Screen Protectors – with the help of parents, teachers and school administrators – will donate up to $25,000[2] to Digital Wish. The funds will then be awarded to one school so that it may equip its classrooms with new tablets and accompanying 3M Screen Protectors.
To reach its goal of donating up to $25,000 to Digital Wish, 3M Screen Protectors is encouraging parents to show their support for 3M Screens for Schools at Facebook.com/3MScreens. For every eligible person who shows his/her support, 3M will donate $1 to Digital Wish and an additional $1 for every person who shares the 3M Screens for Schools message on Facebook[3].
Parents, teachers and school administrators can also apply for the chance to win up to $25,000 in new tablets for their local school at Facebook.com/3MScreens by submitting an essay between 200 and 500 words explaining:
-
Why does the school need the award for new tablets and how would the new tablets change the school for the better?
-
If awarded the new tablets, how would learning be enhanced for students and teaching be enhanced for educators?
-
What other creative fundraising, if any, has the school undertaken in an effort to bring new technology into the classroom?
Entries must be submitted by 11:59 PM EDT on September 12, 2012. Only one entry is permitted per person but multiple entries can be made on behalf of one school. Teachers and school officials are also allowed to enter on behalf of their school. The winning entry will be determined by an independent panel of judges as appointed by Digital Wish. To learn more about who is eligible to participate and to win the grand prize, please review the complete set of contest rules, here.
“We know how difficult it can be for schools to be able to afford new technology, which makes it even more important for that technology to last as long as possible,” says Nicola Stevens, business manager, Mobile Interactive Solutions Division. “We are excited to be partnering with Digital Wish on this program to help teachers and students receive new tablets to enhance the educational experience, and to be protecting them with 3M Screen Protectors.”
According to Heather Chirtea, Executive Director of Digital Wish, “tablets are the hottest technology in schools right now and we’re really grateful to 3M Screen Protectors for the opportunity to grant a school with new devices to help enhance the learning experience for its students.”
For additional information on 3M Screen Protectors and the variety of privacy and protection products offered – including new Natural View Anti-Glare and Fingerprint Fading Screen Protectors – visit www.3MScreens.com and follow @3MScreens on Twitter.

About the Survey

© Digital Wish 2012
Digital Wish runs the School Modernization Initiative, putting one-computer-per-child programs into 28 schools, in order to study the process of technology integration and craft strategies that will allow other schools to replicate success. Every student and teacher in the survey received a dedicated computer for use in a 1:1 computing classroom with take-home rights, and a technology training class each week for 4-6 months.
Data is self-reported by 30 teachers and 465 students participating in the replication phase of the School Modernization Initiative from September 2011 to May 2012. The data was collected through anonymous surveys conducted on www.surveymonkey.com.
The same questions were asked in both the pre-initiative and post-initiative surveys. Both students and teachers reported increases in computer literacy, rising comfort levels with technology, and overall increases in engagement. The data reflects the difference in the responses given between the pre- and post-survey data. Different surveys were given to students versus teachers.
Please be aware that the data collected shows anecdotal trends, self-reported by the teachers and students participating in the initiative. Digital Wish does not conduct formal research, nor do they make any conclusive research-based claims.

Teacher Anecdotes
On student gains as a result of the Digital Wish program...
-
I have noticed much more student confidence on the use of technology. Motivation to do the work has been invaluable. Overall, students' attitudes have been that of wanting to know more.
-
Students are very confident when given an assignment that incorporates the laptop. They are very good at listening to a computer-related lesson once, then working with each other to understand it better and putting it to practical use.
-
Students are more fluent with technology. They are able to select their form of expression using any of the programs we learned.
On the 1:1 initiative’s success in preparing students for the future...
-
It is nice to see the students coming to class these days, computers in hand. It's become second nature to them to immediately turn on their netbooks upon entering class and connect to my blog where most of my lessons are located. The work they do has improved in quality and quantity as a result of the repertoire of technology tools available to them--and the skills they have acquired through Digital Wish has resulted in more creativity and polish in their projects and presentations. I feel our students are better prepared for the demands of Middle School as a result of their experiences with Digital Wish. On behalf of our small school, thank you for contributing to the academic success of our students.
On the netbooks inspiring interest in learning outside of school...
-
We started our Newton Law study in science and decided to incorporate the stop motion videos into our science study. Students selected one of the laws and then were given backdrop materials and clay. They needed to bring the LAWS to life. The kids were very excited about this. Many of the students went home and created their own videos at home. It was wonderful.
